Salmon is a one of the major staples for Indigenous people. For Gitxsan people, we rely on the salmon each year to feed us for the year. We harvest the salmon and prepare them in various ways that will last us all winter long. Our smoke houses, canners and freezers are filled in the summer and we are sustained all winter.

The salmon people travel past our villages and it is because they travel along our waterways we live where we live. They return to the spawning grounds and we must do our part to protect these grounds and the waterways. Our elders, who were taught by their elders, you must not waste anything from the water so we utilize as much as the salmon as we can and we never take more than we need. By doing this, we ensure that the generations that follow will enjoy this tasty treat from Mother Earth.
