Chilkat Tote Bag

This Chilkat urban tote is my homage to my Tsimshian roots. Initially, this intricate design originated from the Tsimshian people (Gitxsan, Nisga'a, and Tsimshian). It then moved to the Tlingat and Haida peoples through trade, and union. The design always has a face which represents the Spirit of the animal represented by seemingly random placements of ovoids, rectangles and circles. The original weaved robes were made of goat's wool intertwined with fine cedar strips. This resulted in the robes you see today that are 1000's of years old. Such beauty.
 
This style of weaving is in danger as there are less than 25 weavers in the chilkat and ravenstail style. To become a weaver is to commit to a lifestyle. So, I honour those who have taken up this craft. 
 
This tote is an urban tote version (magnetic closure, vegan leather straps in 3 colours, lined with navy 100% cotton sateen and includes inside pockets and zippered welt pocket). This tote measures 16" high x 13 " wide with a 3" gusset which makes it perfect for a handbag, school or samples!
